6 Ways to Keep Your Home Warm This Winter

Winter is coming. And for many of us, that means higher heating bills. But there are ways to keep your home warm without breaking the bank. Here are four tips to help you stay toasty all winter long.

1. Layer Up

The first step to staying warm is to layer up. That means putting on a few extra layers of clothing before you leave the house. And when you're at home, make sure to wear comfortable, warm clothes. You can even put on a cozy pair of socks or slippers.

2. Close the Curtains

Another easy way to keep your home warm is to close the curtains or blinds at night. This will help block out the cold air from outside and keep the heat from escaping through the windows.

3. Use a Space Heater

If you have a particularly cold room, try using a space heater. Just be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions and never leave the heater unattended.

4. Seal Up Drafty Doors and Windows

One of the biggest culprits of heat loss is draft doors and windows. To help prevent heat from escaping, seal up any cracks or gaps with weatherstripping or caulk. You can also use draft guards to open and close doors and windows.

5. Change the Furnace Filter

When is the last time you changed your heater’s filter? If it’s been a while, you should change the filter immediately and keep a schedule to check and change the filter regularly.

6. Lower the Thermostat

Contrary to popular belief, blasting the thermostat when you’re cold does more harm than good – especially regarding your energy bill. Lowering your thermostat by a degree takes about three percent off of your energy bill. So it’s best to keep the temperature lower and within your comfort zone to save money.
